The challenge of the undefeated Magpies was always going to be one the Caerphilly Catapults would struggle to rise to. But their early had been surprisingly performances had been surprisingly enterprising, enough to justify an unchanged line-up. Montrose likewise were unchanged, but this was far more obvious and inevitable.
All the luck is with the Montrose Magpies this season and one has to wonder just how visible the earliest etchings of their name onto the League Cup must already be coming. Luck was not on the Magpies’ side in 2011, with injuries and controversies galore, yet still they were grand finalists. This begs the question of what they can achieve when fully fit, confident and more importantly, fortunate.
All the luck has gone their way this year. Their starting seven has remained unchanged, their opponents have fallen by the wayside and their snitches have appeared quite early. Add to that Wimbourne’s loss on Friday night. The world really is good for Magpies manager Amedeus Pagley. It was about to get better.
The luckless Catapults were strong off the blocks, with the diminutive Crisiant Lafarge’s stellar form continuing as she single-handedly kept with the Magpies for the first twelve minutes.
Unfortunately, these twelve minutes were all the match consisted of, the shortest match of the season. The Magpies have all the luck. In a 2012 season that has seen unusually nimble invisible snitches and long matches, on this fortuitous occasion the snitch flew into the side of the speeding Lafarge, spiralling tumbling on rebound to such an extent that not only did it’s tumbling make it more easily identifiable, but it also greatly reduced the flying speed. Alison Abberly is far too good a Seeker to hand such an opportunity to, so she duly won her Magpies yet another match.
Montrose Magpies - 200: Keitch 4, MacTavish 1, Abberley Capture
Caerphilly Catapults - 40: Lafarge 4
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: ALISON ABBERLEY (MAGPIES)
