CAERPHILLY CATAPULTS
Founded: 1402 League Cups: 22 Last League Cup: 2008
2011: 12th
Historically, the Catapults fortunes sway over time between delirious peaks and interminable troughs. The League Cup wins of the late 80s and 90s were followed by a decade of turmoil, which eventually gave way to the golden era of the 2000s, highlighted by the famous undefeated season of 2004 and culminating in the 2008 title. But the 2008 Grand Final win was the last match for a host of veterans, whose retirements suck the Catapults to a historic wooden spoon in 2009 (the first reigning champion to finish last in nearly 300 years.) 2010 and 2011 were little better and Catapult fans feared another phase of acrimony and disaster was upon them. But there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, and the tunnel may be shorter than anticipated.
Under the talismanic tutelage of Welsh captain and two time League Cup winning veteran Asgeir Lofthouse, Caerphilly have built an impressive roster of young talent. If Lofthouse continues to inspire and the youth brigade fulfil their potential, another golden era could only be a few years away. As for 2012? The League Cup is beyond them, but a return to the finals after a three year absence most certainly is not.
